When developing websites on a local WAMP installation, I often need control over the DNS. It is no problem to add a hostname to the Windows hosts file, but a wildcard in the domain does not work. For example you need a wildcard domain when installing Wordpress Multisite locally with subdomains. This article has the solution to add wildcards to your local WAMP installation, without installing Bind or other heavy DNS solutions.
Currently I have to use a pretty slow mobile internet connection. And sometimes a program is using a lot of my bandwidth. This means that I am unable to open websites or I have to wait very long. This is annoying. So I was searching for a method to monitor the network traffic per program.
Download the configuration tool
To configure the Fritz!Box router VPN configuration, download the tool: ‘Configure FRITZ!Box VPN Connection’ tool (v01.00.05 or newer) at www.avm.de/en/vpn. Which runs on 2000/XP/Vista, I did not test it on Windows 7.
The local and remote network can have the same IP range! Local network is the network where you connect from and remote network is where the Fritz!Box router with VPN will be installed (at home or at your office)
This howto is tested on Windows XP SP3 and Windows 7. Probably it also will work on Windows Vista. The router I used is the Fritz!Box WLAN 7170, but the tools for the other Fritz!Boxes like the Fritz!Box 7270 are the same, so it will also work for the other Fritz!Box routers with VPN capabilities.
